Original Title

ヲタクに恋は難しい
Wotaku ni koi wa muzukashii

INTRODUCTION

Online manga series “Wotaku ni Koi wa Muzukashii (tr. Love is Hard for Otaku)” was launched in 2014 on pixiv, an illustration communication service. It is a love story about a closeted otaku who loves manga, anime, and an Internet junkie who is a severe game otaku. The innocent love story between the two endearing otaku was well received by readers and topped numerous manga rankings, such as “the most bookmarked title” and “the online manga that readers most want to see as a book.” Later, the long-awaited “comicalization” was made, and in 2016, it hit the number one spot in the “this manga is amazing! by women” ranking. As the fervor continued, it was adapted into a TV anime aired from April to June 2018, and over 8 million copies of the original manga are currently in circulation (seven volumes, including e-books).
The series captivated the members of a generation that value individuality and make no apologies for what tickles their fancy. “Wotaku ni Koi wa Muzukashii,” the entertaining manga of choice by real users, will be made into a live-action movie in 2020! The director is Yuichi Fukuda, the super hit maker of the The Brave “Yoshihiko” and Gintama series and Kyo-kara Ore-wa!! (I Will Be From Today On). Co-starring in the film as the awkward and lovable otaku couple are two actors working together for the first time, Mitsuki Takahata and Kento Yamazaki, both of whom have appeared in previous Fukuda films. Fujita, the author of the original manga who went to watch the shooting, gives her thumbs-up.
“I felt the production’s respect toward the original work and its fans through things like the actors’ expression, poses, hairstyles, and costume colors.” The film includes a musical scene that adds flair to the zeal in the world of otaku. The otaku movie that promises to be more than just an ordinary live-action film will be released on February 7, 2020! Today amidst an evolution in the ways of the Japanese otaku, it is the birth of a precious and relatable otaku entertainment of the new era!

STORY

At her new company, Narumi Momose, a 26-year-old office clerk, is reunited with her childhood friend Hirotaka Nifuji. Hirotaka is a good-looking and competent businessman, but he is actually a severe game otaku. Narumi is a closeted otaku who likes anime, manga, and novels. Narumi, who more than anything fears being exposed as an otaku, hides her true nature. Hirotaka, a fellow otaku, is the only person she can be herself with. After work, they often go out drinking and have lively discussions on otaku topics. Narumi laments to Hirotaka that she is a poor judge of character and always falls for the wrong guy. Hirotaka responds, “Maybe you’d be comfortable with an otaku boyfriend.” He suggests that they start seeing each other as boyfriend and girlfriend. Narumi agrees. They look forward to being a happy otaku couple, but their romance runs into unexpected walls and challenges!
