INTRODUCTION
Director Daigo Matsui, best known for Just Remembering (2022), Remain in Twilight (2021), and screenwriter Makoto Ueda (Europe Kikaku), best known for Beyond the Infinite Two Minutes (2020), RIVER (2023), team up for the first time to present a new sensation with a mix of “Time Leap” and “Juvenile Mystery” .
Director Daigo Matsui, known for Just Remembering (2022) and Remain in Twilight (2021), has gained a large following, especially among the younger generation, for his numerous youth films.
Screenwriter Makoto Ueda of the theater company Europe Kikaku has gained high acclaim for “time travel” pieces, such as the play Summer Time Machine Blues, which inspired director Matsui to initially set off on his creative journey. This film is based on the original novel that gained attention as the story of “the worst paradox ever,” Rewrite (Hayakawa Publishing Corporation) by Haruka Hojo.
Along with Elaiza Ikeda, who plays the lead role of Miyuki, the talented cast brilliantly portrays their characters of two different ages (as high school students ten years ago and as young adults ten years later in 2019. Kei Adachi, who was hand-picked to play the future boy, Yasuhiko, from 300 years in the future, makes his feature film debut with this piece. Adachi, who was 17 years old at the time of filming, impresses the screen with his fresh and sparkling youth.
Paying homage to The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, this film was shot entirely in Onomichi City, Hiroshima Prefecture. The innocent boy-meets-girl romance of one summer, the fresh and youthful high school days, and the mysterious events that unravel a series of secrets depicted in this "time leap" piece will take not only the main character but also the audience to an unexpected place.
The film’s message of “everyone can rewrite their own life (destiny and future)” shines through on this beautiful journey.
This film, which creates a new sensation with its mixture of “time leap” and “juvenile mystery,” is dedicated to all young people (and former young people) who live in a somewhat harsh and uncertain reality.
STORY
In the summer of the third year of high school, a transfer student named Yasuhiko appears. He is a future boy from 300 years in the future who has leapt through time to visit the past, which he had fallen in love with through a novel he had read.
Yasuhiko shares his secret with Miyuki, and Miyuki gradually falls in love with Yasuhiko as they spend time together.
July 21 - the day their fate drastically changes. Miyuki takes the time leap pill that Yasuhiko gave her and leaps time to meet with herself ten years in the future. The future adult Miyuki shows the young Miyuki a book and tells her, “This is the novel you’ll be writing. You can do it. Even I was able to write it.” It was the book that Yasuhiko will discover in the future. “I’m going to write that?!”
After returning from her time leap, Miyuki finds that she has to say goodbye to Yasuhiko, who is returning to the future. She promises Yasuhiko, “I’ll definitely write the story about the summer we spent together and make the time loop come full circle…”
10 years later, Miyuki, who has become an author, returns to her hometown with the book she wrote about that summer that she finally managed to get published. The purpose of her homecoming is to show the book to her younger self who will soon appear from 10 years ago.
On the fateful day, Miyuki waited all day long for the high school student Miyuki to show up, but she didn't. Why?
As Miyuki begins to investigate the mystery, she attends a class reunion where she learns about her classmates’ shocking truth.
