Once upon a time, when the ”YEN” was the strongest in the world, immigrants called the city "YENTOWN."

INFORMATION

Thirty years ago, Shunji Iwai—then a 33-year-old young filmmaker—released his second feature film, Swallowtail Butterfly, following Love Letter. It presents a multinational world where English, Chinese, and Japanese intertwine. The film features immigrants known as "Yentowns" chasing their dreams, brought to life by a star-studded cast taking on challenging roles. It is also elevated by numerous musical masterpieces from music director Takeshi Kobayashi. This truly unique worldview, unlike anything ever seen before, continues to cultivate a passionate fanbase over time.

And now, in 2026. In this monumental 30th anniversary year of its release, the legendary masterpiece is resurrected on the silver screen in a 4K remaster and Dolby Atmos format, fully supervised by director Shunji Iwai.

STORY

Once upon a time, when the Yen was the strongest in the world,
immigrants called this city, with its gold rush-like fervor, "Yentown."
But the Japanese despised the name,
and instead scornfully referred to the immigrants themselves as "Yentowns" (Yen thieves).
...And this is the story of those Yentowns,
who came to Yentown to dig for Yen.
